OAUTH2 and OIDC by John Naylor

Abstract

Remember the time when budgeting apps would ask you for your bank login credentials so they could show you your balance? At least those apps were packaged software running locally on your laptop. Now they’re SaaS running who knows where and the “pinkie promise” to keep your creds secret and access rights controlled isn’t anywhere close to good enough.OAuth2 and Open ID Connect are a framework and a thin shim atop of it that allow you to authenticate with web-based services without ever having to share your creds, and to specify exactly which of “your stuff” the service can access. You’ve almost certainly used this technology without realizing it. This presentation provides an introduction to the OAuth2 framework and OIDC while highlighting the security benefits it does and does not deliver.

John Naylor is a products guy who has been creating the tools used by digital artists and producers for over 30 years. As Director of Product Security for Ross Video it’s his responsibility to ensure our products are fit for purpose on our customers’ networks.
